“So I play phre music – music of the sun.”
This quote from Sun Ra lies at the heart of the name Phresoul—one of the most compelling projects to emerge from the Italian jazz and experimental scene in recent years.

There’s a deep, almost spiritual resonance between the band and Sun Ra’s legacy—not only in philosophy, but also in practice.
The legendary cosmic pioneer plays a direct role in their journey: Phresoul joined American saxophonist Knoel Scott, an original member of the Sun Ra Arkestra (now under the direction of Marshall Allen), for several performances during his recent Italian tour.
Drawing inspiration from both the avant-garde lineage of jazz pioneers and contemporary innovators like Flying Lotus and Thundercat, Davide Paulis and Enrico Tuzzi have built a project that actively breaks away from jazz orthodoxy.
Their aim is not to preserve tradition, but to deconstruct and reimagine it—infusing it with the restless energy of the present.
Phresoul is constantly evolving, absorbing new textures and ideas to reflect the contradictions and dissonances of our time with biting irony and bold clarity. Improvisation is their chosen language—a way to shape sound into something personal, unpredictable, and emotionally charged.
Though young, the group possesses a striking sense of purpose. Phresoul is part of a new wave of artists who see jazz not as a fixed genre, but as a cultural and sociological force—one that is once again at the center of artistic revolution.
Their recording journey began through a meeting with Raffaele Costantino (Musical Box, Radio2 Rai), which led to the release of their debut album The World Was Made Phresh in March 2019 on Hyperjazz Records.
