Two unreleased versions of “Africa Calling,” recorded during the Echoes of Africa studio sessions of THE INVISIBLE SESSION, capture the spirit of West Africa while embracing a fresh, forward-thinking sound.
These two vibrant, rhythm-driven tracks blend high-quality production with a classic Tony Allen–esque Afrobeat groove, making them perfect for club settings where Black music takes center stage.
The original version of “Africa Calling” unfolds in a purely Afrocentric rhythm, weaving a rich sonic tapestry. Riccardo Onori’s guitar, clearly inspired by “Amalinja” — a 1972 gem by The Don Isaac Ezekiel Combination — dances fluidly with the celestial tones of Gambian kora master Haruna “Jalimansa” Kuyateh. The result is a hypnotic journey, steeped in mystery and magic.
Producer Massimo Napoli, aka Galathea, reimagines the track in a second version that maintains the original structure but shifts the focus.
Here, the meditative kora floats with a dreamlike quality, solitary and sublime above a backdrop of layered percussion, clavinet, and keyboards — painting an entirely new and enigmatic soundscape.
